Our collection of wool fabrics is crafted to perform—each blend is thoughtfully developed to offer distinct benefits like softness, breathability, flexibility, and temperature regulation. Merino wool naturally offers excellent insulation and moisture-wicking properties, making it a reliable choice for comfort in all seasons.
Mulesing-free
All merino wool used is 100% mulesing-free, documented as mulesing-free, and 99% of our wool is sourced from South Africa. Mulesing is less common in South Africa due to the following reasons:
Breed Differences:
South African farmers typically raise Merino sheep with lower wrinkle skin or crossbreeds that are less susceptible to flystrike.
This reduces the need for invasive procedures like mulesing.
Climate:
The drier climate in much of South Africa means fewer flies and less risk of flystrike, a condition that mulesing is used to prevent.
Market Incentives:
South African wool producers benefit from marketing their wool as non-mulesed, especially to premium international buyers (e.g. in Europe and Japan).
Breathable
Merino wool is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture vapour. It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling wet. This makes it ideal for regulating body moisture, as it transports sweat away from the skin while remaining dry to the touch. This breathability makes it comfortable during both rest and activity, and in both warm and cold environments.
Stabilises body temperature
Wool fibres have a naturally crimped structure that traps air and provides insulation. This structure slows heat transfer and helps maintain a consistent body temperature. Whether the surroundings are cold or warm, the wool adapts, helping to keep the wearer comfortable. Even when moist, wool continues to insulate due to an exothermic reaction that releases heat, as moisture is absorbed. It also works to balance humidity by moving moisture outward, maintaining thermal comfort.
Soft and non-itchy
Merino wool is exceptionally fine—ranging from 17.5 to 21.5 microns—making it far softer than traditional wool types. The fineness allows the fibres to bend easily, reducing the scratchy feel associated with thicker wool.
